Environmental Conservation
Most rural communities are in touch with their environment and understand that they are guardians not owners of the land and they need to ensure future generations can enjoy its fruits. This is what sustainability or environmental stewardship means.
Population grow, pollution, the climate crisis and its erratic weather patterns are all placing great pressures on the land. The increased use of chemicals to battle nutrient depleted soils and unwelcome pests is causing environmental problems and increased dependency. Farmers are not working with but against nature and as we know, nature always wins.
Mikuyu Tanzania strongly believe that, at a local level, if those who rely on the land can see their actions are destroying it and the future well-being of their families, then they will take action to change their behaviour and embrace greater stewardship.
Our Goal is to Promote environmental sustainability through community based conservation initiatives.
Community Conservation Programme
This programme is currently being researched in collaboration with locally led stakeholders - ILT, RECORDA, EARN and Babati Town and Ward Agricultural Officers. We are exploring options on how to provide:
training on environmental awareness - in terms of soil management
training on sustainable resource management
climate change adaption
biodiversity conservation.
The goal is support and encourage farmers to change their current farming practices and adopt one that protect and enhance the soil and provide long term growth through diversifying crops and adding more trees to their land.
Green Technology Programme
This programme is also being developed in collaboration with locally led stakeholders - ILT and FIDE, and Babati Town and Ward Community Development and Agricultural Officers. We are exploring how to provide:
alternatives to open fire cooking
alternatives to charcoal production
domestic use of bio-gas
water conservation
sustainable agricultural practices
The goals are to reduce the felling of trees, plant new ones long with grasses; to maximise the use of rainwater and farm using permaculture techniques that enrich and stabilise the soil
