Schools should be places of safety and inspiration.
In many parts of Tanzania they are not - yet
Together, we are changing that. We envisage a Tanzania where every child has access to a quality education and the tools to thrive.
Who are we?
Mikuyu Tanzania (formerly Livingstone Tanzania Trust) is a community-driven development organization (Charity Commission of England and Wales No 1119512). We partner with Tanzanian stakeholders to dismantle the barriers to rural poverty
By working at the intersection of education, health, and sustainable livelihoods, we facilitate lasting change that is identified, designed, and owned by the communities themselves.
Our Approach: The SLICE Values
Our proven model of co-production is guided by five core principles:
Stewarding
Longevity
Integrity
Collaboration
Equity
Our Vision: Thriving communities in Babati with the opportunity and agency to shape their own futures.
Our Mission: To collaborate with communities on locally led initiatives that create sustainable opportunities and overcome the barriers to success.
Flourishing through Learning
Our Thematic Areas
Our Strategy is to tackle the 3 major contributors to poverty - Education, Livelihoods and Health. Tackling any one of them alone will not alleviate poverty, but by tackling them all at the same time in one location we can support the community to sustainably overcome poverty.
We recognise that each thematic area is complex, but their interconnectedness can be used when we work closely with the community to build momentum for change and a belief that change is achievable.
We work by adopting a co-production method of working where all voices are heard and all participate in the development process from the outset. This ensures that we only do what is wanted and needed by the community and that the community has ownership of the projects.
We are aware of all the power imbalances within our partnerships and that the power we have is to ensure that funds donated to us are wisely and are efficiently spent to achieve the goals of each programme and of the organisation.
Facilitating change since 2007
Moving forward with determination
“I was also greatly impressed by the collective and mutually responsible ethos that underpins the work of Livingstone Tanzania Trust (now known as Mikuyu Tanzania).
The fact that communities have to exhibit a social and fiscal contribution to the projects gives the work Livingstone Tanzania Trust does a healthy chance of having an impact over generations rather than just in the short term.”
